Lately (as of this writing), life circumstances have forced me to apply for Roblox scripting commissions. It’s not like sending out tons of resumes via LinkedIn and putting up with shitty bureaucracy and bullshit HR departments.
The way I usually work is much more informal. People simply post their portfolios and a message offering freelance services in a specific area on certain Discord servers. Or clients can offer jobs directly so they don’t have to do the searching themselves.
In my case, because I’m still stuck waiting on the shitty bureaucracy of a particular Discord server, I can’t post an ad for myself. Instead, I’ve had to reach out to the people looking for developers.
The plot twist is that 100% of these individuals never reply, or in the “best” (and most ironic) scenario, they have direct messages disabled for that server.
I know this happens all the time, people don’t check their DMs or friend requests, they just let that shit pile up to 99+ forever. It makes me wonder if they actually hired anyone at all. If this is how they operate, I’d really like to know how the devs who did get hired actually managed to get noticed.
My boss is one of these. I’ve often seen him screensharing on Discord calls with a 99+ notification on his inbox. I’m close with him, but I have no idea why he does that. There must be something important or of his interest in those message requests, but nah, his pride gets the best of him, and he just won’t check.
I have a right to complain because I always try to reply, even if its just a “No, thanks” to every message I receive, thats better than seeing a message and ignoring it, as if you told to go to hell on someone who asked a perfectly valid question or gave you a compliment.
“I aint got time to read” is another shitty argument, you don’t have time to check but yes you have time to spend 1 hour or more in fucking TikTok wasting your life.
Bro,
Pride prevents problems from being solved.
