Scalable conversations with the people of the islands
In Rod and Reef you talk to dozens of characters spread across four islands. They offer you jobs, tell you the story, sell you rods and bait, and remember what you did for them.
How it works
- What a character tells you depends on how far along you are: they greet you, remind you of the quest you’re halfway through, offer you the next one, or tell you they have nothing left for you.
- You pick your answers, and some of them do things: accept a quest, open a shop, choose a boat for a trip or start a cutscene.
- Text appears letter by letter. Every character has their own voice made of short sounds, and lines with recorded voice are typed in time with the audio.
- The camera frames the conversation, the rest of the UI hides and the character animates while talking.
- If you follow a quest from your journal, the character who gives it offers it to you first.
Why you can’t cheat
Every conversation is walked twice: on your screen to show it, and on the server to check that what you ask for is something you were actually offered. That way nobody can collect a reward by talking to the wrong character. Conversations are data rather than code, so adding new characters and quests doesn’t mean touching the system. The details are in the portfolio version.
