When a fish bites in Rod and Reef, a needle and a target spin in opposite directions and you have to click as they cross. Your rod and the fish decide how hard it is, and every hit sets off a burst of particles.

Fighting the fish

When a fish bites in Rod and Reef, a dial appears. A needle and a target spin in opposite directions, and you have to click right as they cross.

How it works

  • Your rod controls the needle: a better rod makes the needle slower and easier to time.
  • The fish controls the target: if it’s rarer than your rod, or an unusually big one, it moves faster.
  • Every hit reverses the spin and the target reappears further ahead. If you let it go by without clicking, it counts as a miss.
  • It’s a tug of war: a hit erases a miss before it counts, so mistakes can be recovered. You win with 5 hits (3 if the fish is common) and lose with 5 misses.
  • The more centered your click, the better the grade and the bigger the burst of particles.
  • The window to hit is never so small that it comes down to luck, unless you’re fishing for something far beyond your rod.

The effects

The particles are authored as regular Roblox emitters and drawn in the UI with Spray, a library I made for that. The geometry of the dial and the odds of winning depending on how well you time your clicks are in the portfolio version.
