530 quests across four islands

Warning

Rod and Reef hasn’t been released yet, and videos or GIFs of this system can’t be shown until it launches.

Rod and Reef has 530 quests. Most of them are fishing jobs from the characters on each island (“catch 5 Perch for Morris”), and the rest are a bit of everything: deliver something, find a lost item, give someone a ride in your boat, or follow the story.

How it works

  • Each character gives you their quests in order, as you level up and finish the earlier ones.
  • There are fishing quests, side quests and story quests. When the story has something new to tell, it comes first.
  • You can carry three at once: two fishing quests, which progress on their own while you fish, and one special quest, the kind that sends you somewhere.
  • If you accept a quest without a free slot, the game opens your journal so you can pick which one to drop, and the new one is accepted automatically as soon as the slot frees up.
  • The journal sorts quests by level and, within each level, by how much effort they take, so the easiest ones come first.
  • You can follow a quest from the journal, and the character who gives it offers it to you first.
  • If a quest asks for a particular fish, luck gives you a small push toward it.

Under the hood

The requirements between quests form a graph, and the game can disable a quest without breaking the story chain that runs through it. Almost all of the content is generated by tools from the design documents. More details in the portfolio version.
