Sword Masters: Zombies

2024-09-15

Two Sword Masters maps are zombie hunts: waves of eight kinds of zombies, including two minibosses, that chase the nearest player, look at you as they come and punch when they get close.

Zombie hunts

Warning

Sword Masters was abandoned in October 2024, and many of its assets belong to the group that owned it, so this system can’t be shown running.

On Mystery Forest and Colosseum the enemies are zombies. They come in waves, chase whoever is closest and don’t stop until you kill them or the round ends.

How it works

  • Each map has four kinds of zombies: normal ones, fast ones, slow and tough ones, and a rare miniboss (the Crystal Guard and the Victorious Zomdiator) with ten to fifteen times the health of a regular zombie.
  • Waves come every few seconds with a random number of zombies, and the miniboss is 5% of the spawns.
  • Zombies follow you around obstacles. They don’t run straight at you: they re-plan their route every few steps, so they react when you change direction.
  • When a zombie has you in front of it, it turns its head to look at you.
  • They punch when they get close, and the hit lands right when the punch in the animation does.
  • The minibosses have their own death animation, and the rest fall like ragdolls.

Under the hood

Pathfinding uses SimplePath, an open-source module, and on top of it each zombie walks in short hops and asks for a new route at the end of each one. If a zombie goes a second without moving properly, it tries again on its own, so none of them get stuck for good. The math behind the hops and the watchdog is in the portfolio version.
